About
Born in Toronto with roots in Guyana, and now based in Marathon Village, Ottawa, Jamaal Amir Akbari—known on stage as JustJamaal ThePoet or JAAWORD—is a griot of the modern age. A multidimensional artist, he explores themes of liberation, ancestral memory, spirit realities, and the transformative power of truth.
He is an award-winning poet, songwriter, recording artist, screen and performance artist, arts educator, and creative entrepreneur. As Ottawa’s Poet Laureate Emeritus (2017–2019), Jamaal has become a cultural voice of his generation, sharing his work nationally and internationally across stages, classrooms, and sacred community circles.
A devoted husband and father of eight, Jamaal’s art is inseparable from his life as a family man. His experiences as son, father, and husband ground his writing in authenticity and love, transforming personal testimony into a collective offering that illuminates both the resilience and vulnerability of humanity.
